History of the Moldovan penitentiary system team participation at the European Football Championship between the prison system teams

The first edition of the European Football Championship between the prison system teams was held in 1991, hosted by the United Kingdom. The tournament organizers aimed to facilitate the conditions for creation of new friendship relationships between the law enforcement institutions and the countries they represent.

The tournament has become a tradition and takes place once every two years and as a result of the efforts made by the United Kingdom, Netherlands and France, the event was joined by prison systems teams from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Croatia, Austria, Romania and others.

Although sports activities are tangential to the activity of prison sevice, this competition motivated the employees of the penitentiary system to represent the Republic of Moldova at the Championship starting with 2012.

The Department of Penitentiary Institutions, participated for the first time in the 11th edition of the European Championship. They competed in Iasi, Romania along with seven other countries as France, Scotland, Estonia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Austria and the host team.

The 12th edition took place between 1 – 5 of July, 2014, in the city of Klagenfurt, Austria in which the Moldovan penitentiary system team participated alongside with the teams from prisons systems from countries as Romania, Austria, Switzerland, France, Bulgaria, Slovak Republic and others.

Also the representative of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions participated between 12 – 20 of June 2016, at the 13th edition of the European Football Championship between the prison system teams, editiom 2016, which took place in the town of Venarey - Les Laumes, the Dijon region of France.

The football team of the penitentiary system from Republic of Moldova had a proper physical training and a team spirit thanks to which we had an honorable evolution, obtaining 4 victories, 3 draws and only one defeat and the team was qualified in the semifinal, ending the competition on the 3th place. Thanks to this result and to the spirit of competition that was showed by the delegation of the penitentiary system of the Republic of Moldova we was submitted to host the 14th edition of the championship, with the support of the Moldavian Football Federation.
